Having worked as a remedial massage therapist on the Central Coast for sometime now, I often receive questions from customers about what type of remedial massage we do at our centre and how it can help them.
Central Coast Remedial Massage Therapists often leave their clients disappointed!!
This might seem a bit controversial but after receiving these requests on numerous occasions I realised that the questions were being asked because people’s needs were not being met by their previous massage therapists. In fact I often meet many people who have been to several ‘so called’ remedial therapists looking for a solution to their problems, only to leave greatly disappointed.
The reason that people are disappointed with previous treatments is that many massage therapists claim that they do remedial massage, but they are basically only doing glorified relaxation massage.
That simply means that you will most likely walk away from your treatment disappointed. And more than that you have wasted your time and resources and your problem or concern hasn’t been fixed or addressed properly. This is not good for the reputation of good remedial massage therapists, or the reputation of central coast massage in general.
And it certainly isn’t good for you when you are wanting a good and decent massage. That’s why I want to give you a bit of advice on what to look for.
Choosing the right remedial massage therapist
Here are a few things to consider and a few questions to ask when choosing a remedial massage therapist.
1. Are they properly qualified?
Does your therapist have a minimum of diploma in remedial massage? Are they able to take your health fund claims? These are two good indicators that your massage therapist is adequately qualified. But that is not enough
2. How much experience have they had?
How long has your selected therapist been working? What kind of experience have they had? If you have a specific problem that you need help with, it’s a really good idea to ask questions about your condition and see if the therapist can answer the questions with confidence about what they are doing. If they are a professional massage therapist, they will be able to ask you valid questions about your associated symptoms. From their communications you should be able to determine their level of expertise.
3. Do they run a professional business?
There is a BIG difference between a professional massage therapist and a hobbyist!! Professionals take their work seriously and should be knowledgeable about various conditions and how to treat them. A professional will be treating many clients and be very skilled in applying their techniques. A hobbyist may only do a few treatments here and there. Therefore they may not have a toolbox of techniques but simply go through a routine.
4. Have they had experience dealing with SPECIFIC problems
A good measure of your therapists skills is to ask them if they have had experience in working with specific problems, especially if you have one you want to deal with. I know I’ve already kind of mentioned this above when considering your therapists experience or through your therapist just being a hobbyist and going through a ‘routine’.
You see the thing is, a remedial routine sometimes works for maintenance, but is definitely no good for problem issues. What exactly will your selected massage therapist do for your back pain? If you can’t stand up straight and you are in a lot of pain, will they be able to fix it? If you have carpel tunnel syndrome, what are the chances of success and recovery?
These are the types of things your therapist should know.
5. Ask around and trust recommendations
A good therapist or massage centre will have a good reputation so when in doubt ask around through friends, family and colleagues. Chances are someone will have been to a reputable massage therapist in your area that they can recommend to you.
The important thing to remember is don’t just choose any old therapist. Make sure to ask the right questions and make careful considerations. That way you will have all your needs met, have a great remedial massage treatment, and get the right advice to move forward with your condition or injury.
